As we close another successful program year, we welcome the start of a new one with new goals, a new location, and new board members. MESS (formerly Mission Adopt-a-Block), has made tremendous strides over the years and endeavours to continue working hard alongside volunteers to tackle the issues of littering and illegal dumping in Mission, BC.
Since the introduction of new programs throughout 2016 and 2017, MESS has seen a surge in volunteer participation. Volunteer contributions rose to over 45 000 hours for the year; with a goal of over 50 000 hours for 2018. New opportunities for businesses, and more flexible opportunities for non-profit fundraisers, should encourage even higher engagement in anti-littering efforts in Mission.
MESS was joined by 24 volunteers, board members, DOM staff members, and city counselors for an overview of 2017 and discussion of goals for 2018. The following figures were presented by MESS Executive Director, Sophie Thomas, during her presentation at the AGM:
"The rise in volunteers and volunteer efforts is staggering. We couldn't be more thrilled with the dedication of Mission residents to tackling litter head on." explained Ms. Thomas. "Our goal is to encourage continued action against littering to create a cleaner, healthier, and safer Mission." Volunteers and community members are invited to express their concerns and put forward recommendations by responding to campaigns on the MESS website.
2018 goals of MESS include an increase of major clean-ups; the introduction of new educational events including Earth Day and a BC Rivers Day Spin-a-Thon, and campaigns that speak against cigarette litter, encourage a reduction in plastic packaging, and inform community members of litter related fines. There will also be continued additions to the School Litter Challenge and Business Program.
MESS is delighted to receive the financial support of the District of Mission, BC Gaming Commission, Mission Community Foundation, Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, and School District 75, along with in-kind support from Gordon Yard (CPA), Nutek Signs, Rich Vigurs (Shutternutter.Pro), Wallace Works Furniture Design Co., Cedarbrooke Chateau, Mission City Record, and What's On magazine.
